Why brands must optimize their web sites for mobile

As we all know, in Asia and in most developing countries, people predominantly access the web via their mobile or handheld devices. Especially in the developing countries, desktops and laptops were often simply unavailable or unattainable. Now that mobile device sales have exploded in the West, we are seeing a similar trend. Research firm, Gartner, now predicts that web access via mobile devices will outstrip desktop and laptop web access by 2013. And as this Pew Internet article shows, young people are driving the charge when it comes to mobile computing.

“Fourth-fifths of young adults between the ages of 18 and 29 are wireless Internet users, and while many of them are getting to the Web using their laptops, they’re also using netbooks, cell phones, game consoles and e-readers”
“Mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access devices worldwide by 2013, according to a new forecast by research firm Gartner. That’s an even more aggressive outlook than Morgan Stanley’s projection that the mobile Web will outstrip the desktop Web in five years. Gartner estimates the combined installed base of smartphones and browser-equipped enhanced phones will surpass 1.82 billion units by 2013, eclipsing the total of 1.78 billion PCs by then.
But the firm warns that many sites still are not optimized for the mobile Web, even though cell users expect to make fewer clicks on their phones than on a PC. To successfully expand into mobile, publishers will have to reformat sites for the small form-factor of handheld devices.”
